I am a Law Masters student with a BA in History from Christ Church, Oxford University. Professionally, I also have over 35 published articles, several national award nominations, and experience as Chief Editor of a student academic journal.
Over the past five years working in private tutoring, I have given hundreds of hours worth of lessons working with students of all ages and capacities. My focus in the last two years has been on preparing students for the notoriously difficult-to-navigate Oxbridge applications process. As a former Oxford University student myself, I can offer more than just an insight into university life, offering my students a true understanding of what tutors are looking for in an applicant. With these criteria in mind, I look to cultivate them in my students through mutual understanding and growth, where students know where they need to improve and why.
Outside of the Oxbridge applications process, I have significant experience tutoring both GCSE and A-Level history. I am happy to conduct sessions for short-term exam techniques and preparation or more long-term content-based teaching.

Working as a freelance tutor, I have taught a wide variety of subjects, including Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English Lit, English lang, History, Geography, Maths, and Classical Civilisations, to a GCSE Level.
Additionally, since 2020 I have worked in specialised A-Level and GCSE History tutoring, where I pride myself on being able to push students into the highest grade boundaries through a targeted and personalised teaching experience.
I like to see myself as someone who pushes themselves in both a physical and mental manner. This often leads me in search of engaging experiences where I have the opportunity to do some good in the process. An example of this is my PADI Advanced Open Water Diver qualification which I have used to work on reef conservation projects in the Caribbean. Closer to home, I have also worked in forest conservation in the Lake District.

The wealth of knowledge and passion for History which Lewis has makes him a superb tutor to discuss with and learn from. His open and friendly manner also inspires a great sense of confidence.
General
Lewis’s highly personalised and engaging style of tuition was critical in ensuring I obtained an offer to Oxford University for History. He was vital in guiding me through the complex admissions process, as well as in making sure that I could offer my best at each stage.
Regarding the History Aptitude Test, Lewis offered advice as to what to look for in a source question and on structuring a response, which proved to be crucial in the exam. I distinctly remember feeling deep gratitude to Lewis during the test as I navigated a particularly tricky question! Lewis was thorough, spending a long time marking and offering feedback on my practice answers, in addition to recommending further improvements. His keen focus on detailed analysis allowed me to develop my ideas further, and increase the quality of my answers beyond a level I had thought attainable.
The interview stage, though naturally stressful, was made much easier by Lewis’s reassuring nature. His conducting of practice interviews allowed me to hone my critical thinking skills, with this being compounded by comprehensive feedback. Moreover, I found the real interviews to be incredibly similar to those conducted by Lewis - a testament to his commitment to ensuring a realistic experience of the admissions process. Detailed discussions of sources and the historical method also allowed me to feel well equipped by the interview stage.
In all, I would highly recommend Lewis to anyone who appreciates acutely personalised tuition and would like a genuine experience of the admissions process.
Lewis was a consistently engaging and informative tutor who helped elevate not only my knowledge of course content but also my understanding of techniques to apply that information most effectively. Lewis' guidance was essential in supporting me in achieving my goal of reading history at Oxbridge.
I find it especially useful when tutoring GCSE or A-level students to break a lesson down into three distinct sections: Review, Learn, and Apply. The Review section focuses on responding to work submitted prior to the session and giving detailed feedback that we can openly discuss.
Naturally, the 'Learn' section centres on the appointed subject for the session. As far as practicable, I try to keep an open dialogue during this portion to avoid the conversation becoming one-sided and unengaging for the student.
Finally, in the Apply section, I typically walk the student through a practice question and suggest examples of how the lesson's contents can be optimally applied. This portion is also highly valuable in gauging the student's understanding of the lesson. The student will then have several practice questions to complete in their own time, which we will then go over in the next session's Review section.
