An artist undoubtedly worth looking out for, Salamay crafts real, relevant and relatable music like no other. Known to inspire and connect with audiences through his performances, Salamay translates everyday life into an audible format. Cork-raised, his genre-spanning hip hop presents meaningful records that are inspired by the greats including Fela Kuti, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean & more.
“Taking it one day at a time”, Salamay is focused on longevity and remains intent on building an authentic fanbase.
Nigerian born artist, Salamay made a name for himself at the end of 2021 with his thought- provoking EP called 'E. P.' (Enemy of Progress). Sharing the same tender and poetic qualities as the likes of Loyle Carner, Saba and Little Simz, Salamay stripped it back even further with lullaby-esque production and drip-fed storytelling on his debut body of work with one of the tracks earning a No. 2 position on District Magazine's 'Top Ten Tracks'.
One of his most recent releases, 'Stress Out My Mind' landed him on Spotify's 'New Music Friday UK' and saw him earn a spot on the cover of Spotify’s hugely popular Fresh Finds UK & IE playlist. An Ireland Music Week Showcase Artist, having performed in a series of festivals including Electric Picnic and just coming off a successful debut headline show, Salamay is showing no signs of stopping. A previous Talkatives Slam poetry winner who is currently working on his upcoming project, Salamay is set to have a career defining year.
The primary task of an artist is to make something intriguing, one-of-a-kind, or utilitarian for use as an advertisement or product packaging, for sale or exhibition, or simply to enjoy.
I am the case study. There is much to be said about firsthand information from someone who is experiencing what they are discussing.
Rather than giving hypothetical circumstances, I draw from my own experiences, and as a young artist, I've learned a lot of Do's and Don'ts in less than two years. Given that no one ever stops learning, I feel obliged to share my mistakes and faults, which I would have paid to learn far sooner. I've come across other guides that discuss related topics, but none as comprehensive and educated as this.
Discussing topics from what to be aware of at the start of your profession, to performance exercises, writing practises, and sufficient planning to mental health and dealing with fear, my journey is the case study and what I will be referring to, along with the experiences of others during the class.
